APD’s No Refusal Weekend starts New Year’s Eve at 9 p.m. If you refuse to submit a breath or blood test, officers will get a search warrant to test your blood.
“If you don’t want to be subjected to it, simple solution, don’t drink and drive,” states Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo.
Taxis are one way to get home safe, but there’s a new option to make a designated driver just a phone call away. A group of college students started Tipsy Taxi in October. The designated driving service sends a team of two drivers out to pick you up. Once person drives you home in your own vehicle and the other person follows behind in a Tipsy Taxi car to pick up the first driver.
Tipsy Taxi serves the Austin area and there’s even a free iPhone app that lets you request a ride with a touch of a button.
“They don’t want to risk leaving their car downtown or having to come back in the morning to pick it up so the advantage is you get home safe and your car gets home safe,” said Brooke Caplinger, Tipsy Taxi.
All you have to do is call 30 minutes in advance. Tipsy Taxi charges a five dollar pickup fee plus $2 dollars a mile. That’s cheaper than most cab rides adn a lot less than a DWI.
DPS Tropper Robbie Barrera says a first time DWI conviction could cost you up to $15,000.
So if you drink this New Year’s, make sure someone else is doing the driving.
